Who Needs a Tree? Oaktober Edition

Who uses our trees, and why is it important to us? Join a park interpreter to celebrate "Oaktober,"
on this informative 1/2-mile hike learning about all the life that surrounds and depends on oaks and their life cycles.

Did you know that oak trees and wasps had an important role in the writing of historical documents
such as the Declaration of Independence? Join a park interpreter for a program on how these are all connected.

Branching Out: Oaktober Edition

Date: Sunday, October 12

Time: 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Location: Arkansas Arboretum Trail; 12820 Pinnacle Valley Road, Little Rock, AR 72223

Join a park interpreter for a 0.5-mile hike through the Arkansas Arboretum trail for an "Oaktober" celebration!
Learn more about some of the different kinds of oak trees on the trail and how they support wildlife and you at the park!
Bring water and sturdy shoes for this easy hike along the ADA-accessible trail.
Stick around after the hike for a short oak tree craft!

What Makes a Great Oak Tree? - Oaktober Celebration

What makes an oak tree an oak tree? Who relies on oak trees as habitat or for food?
Join a park interpreter to learn more about the different kinds of oak trees in Arkansas
and how they're distinguished from other similar tree species.

The Nature of Oaks: Screening and Discussion

Date: Thursday, October 16

Time: 6:30* pm - 8:00 pm 

(*in-person option for CAMN members starts at 6:00 if you want to socialize and eat pizza)

Location: CAMN members may attend in person at the Witt Stephens Nature Center OR online - you can
register using the guest registration link below or register on the CAMN calendar as usual. Either works!

Non-CAMN guests: Register using this link and the Zoom link will be sent to you prior to the event 

Attend this screening to hear Doug Tallamy reveal the essential role oak trees play in supporting biodiversity
and explain how they sustain wildlife and healthy ecosystems. 

The recorded webinar is about 50 minutes long. Afterward, we will have a Q&A and discussion.
If you are already familiar with Doug Tallamy's work, spread the word.


Oaktober Story Time at WordsWorth Books

We're excited to join the Central Arkansas Master Naturalists and other tree enthusiasts around the country in celebrating 
the mighty oak! Did you know? There are 30 native species of oaks in Arkansas and their acorns feed over 100 different
wildlife species. How cool is that?

At our Oaktober Story Time, we'll learn more fascinating facts with fun and informative books about oak trees and acorns.
We'll make a cute acorn craft. And, as always, we'll sing songs, play games, and enjoy a yummy, themed snack. 
It'll be oaksome… you better be-leaf it!


Community Walk - Oaktober Edition!

Date: Saturday, October 25

Time: 10:00 am (FLEX)

Location: Dee Brown Library; 6325 Baseline Rd, Little Rock, AR 72209

Ages: Families, adults, teens

Description: Join us for a short walk to Ottenheimer park. Round trip should be less than 60 minutes.
We will meet in the lobby of the Dee Brown library starting at 10am. We will leave promptly at 10:20am.
Along the way, we will notice oak trees and discuss facts about them. 

Please bring a refillable water bottle, and anything else you may need to be comfortable walking outdoors,
such as a hat, sunscreen, bug spray, etc.

Watercolor: Our Natural World - Oaktober Edition!

Date: Saturday, October 25

Time: 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Location: Dee Brown Library; 6325 Baseline Rd, Little Rock, AR 72209

Ages: Families, adults, teens

Description: This is a self guided outdoor watercolor class. We will provide you with everything you need
to complete your own watercolor painting including paint, portable easel, and stool. No formal instruction
will be provided, but each participant will draw a random prompt to ignite their imagination - all about Oak trees!
An instructor will be on hand for advice. 
Limited to 10 participants, first come first serve.
Please bring a refillable water bottle, and anything else you may need to be comfortable outdoors, such as a hat,
sunscreen, bug spray, etc.

How to Identify and Remove Invasive Species with
Arkansas Wild Spaces and LR Pushy Plants

Date: Saturday, October 25

Time: 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Location: Southwest Community Center; 6401 Baseline Rd, Little Rock, AR 72209

Ages: Adults

Description:  Come and learn hands-on invasive plant identification with CAMN Arkansas Wild Spaces guides
and learn to use the tools from the tool library collection to clean up your own yard for Oaktober!

We will work on the Southwest Park Trail (near the library and Southwest Community Center) to identify and remove
a few common invasive plants and demonstrate the proper us of a 'pullerbear', a root slayer, and a weeding shovel.
This event will also teach participants about Little Rock's Parks and Recreations program Pushy Plants. 
Please wear closed toed shoes and bring a water bottle.

Oaktober 4th Tuesday Family Fun

Date: Tuesday, October 28

Time: 4:30pm -6:30 pm

Location: Millie Brooks Library; 13024 AR-365, Wrightsville, AR 72183

Visit CALS Brooks Library on the 4th Tuesday of the month for Family Fun between 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM,
including table top games, activity sheets and a scavenger hunt.
To celebrate OAKtober, play Tree Leaf Bingo for Prizes beginning at 5:30 PM.
