The Arkansas River Valley Audubon Society will meet on Monday, September 23, 7:00 p.m., in Conway at Hendrix College, in the Donald W. Reynolds Center for Life Sciences, room 010, which is in the basement north hall of the building.

The program will be "The Latest in the Search for the Texas Frosted Elfin" by Dr. Matthew D. Moran, Bill and Connie Bowen Odyssey Professor of Biology. Dr. Moran will give an update on the status of the Texas Frosted Elfin butterfly, a rare species in Arkansas.

The Texas frosted elfin (Callophrys irus hadros) is a small butterfly native to southwestern Arkansas and nearby parts of Oklahoma and Texas. It is considered rare and may someday be listed as an endangered species. The larvae of the species feeds on various species of Baptisia. The butterflies are active in the spring when the host plants are actively growing. Dr. Moran has been investigating the habitat requirements for this species so that we can determine how best to manage the species.
