Part 5 of our hike series.

The plan is twofold: One, we want to observe this area as it explodes thru the change from winter thru spring and into summer. We will record what vegetation is there, when the buds begin to swell and when it flowers. Two, we just like getting out and being in the woods.

It is worth recalling that during the hikes last spring, we identified a total of 120 plant species. That total includes 55 species of trees/shrubs, 54 species of herbaceous plants, and 11 species of ferns. Some were spectacularly beautiful like the Yellow Lady’s-Slipper. Others, like the Spring Coral Root and Twayblade Orchids, were special finds. Who will ever forget the Magnolia Mommas!

The hikes will start at 10:00 a.m. Depending on how much gawking and talking we do, plan on spending approximately three to three and a half hours. We will move at a fairly slow pace. On average we will cover two to three miles. Even at a slow pace, you need to stay hydrated. So, bring along water and a snack. Also, keep in mind the mild winter has not only been good for hikers, it has also been an easy winter for ticks and other insects. Come prepared with insect repellent.

IMPORTANT: There will be times that we will NOT BE FOLLOWING A TRAIL but will be BUSH WHACKING. There will be some uneven, rocky terrain. You will need appropriate footwear and we recommend a walking stick. If you are not steady on your feet, this might not be an appropriate activity for you.

WHERE: We have not yet determined the exact location for each hike. We can tell you that we will be in the same general location as last year. That is between Crystal Springs and Mountain Harbor. We will be finalizing those plans in the next few weeks.

Spring weather is just around the corner. It is time to get out of that recliner, turn off the TV, put down the novel, pack a sack lunch, grab a jacket and GO!
