DLAMN – Winter Tree ID; Outdoor Classroom Presentation

Hot Springs National Park is excited to welcome Master Naturalist and National Park Service volunteer, Bill Randel to the Gulpha Gorge Amphitheater to lead a free outdoor workshop on winter tree identification.

We will assemble at the amphitheater at Gulpha Gorge Campground. The coffee and treats will be ready at 9:10 and the class will start at 9:30. It will be chilly sitting on the amphitheater benches. Dress accordingly and bring a cushion and/or a blanket. We will finish the outdoor class at 11:30. After a short break for lunch, we will resume at 12:30 at Whittington Park for an afternoon field study.

When we think of tree identification, we typically think of using leaf characteristics to determine the type of tree. Just about everyone made a leaf collection as a child. Identifying trees in the winter months requires the use of a different set of characteristics. Join Certified Master Naturalists John Simpson and Bill Randel in an outdoor classroom presentation on Winter Tree ID. We’ll explore the different characteristics of woody plants that enable identification in the winter months. Once we understand these characteristics, we will use the book, Trees of Arkansas, by Dr. Eric Sundell in the identification process. All NiTs attending the Winter Tree ID events will receive a copy of Dr. Sundell’s book.

This outdoor classroom presentation is the first of several events focused on winter tree identification.

Should the weather force cancellation of this event, you will be notified by email.

A tree does not die in the winter; nor is it resurrected in the spring.
It waits. – Hesse
