DLAMN – Winter Tree ID Class

The Winter Tree ID Class will be held at the Arkansas School for Math, Science, and the Arts (ASMSA) from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. We will meet in the Board Room of the Administration Building. Coffee and treats will be ready at 8:40ish and the class will start promptly at 9:00. After a short break for lunch, we will resume at 12:30 at Whittington Park for an afternoon field study.

When we think of tree identification, we typically think of using leaf characteristics to determine the type of tree. Just about everyone made a leaf collection as a child. Identifying trees in the winter months requires the use of a different set of characteristics. Join Certified Master Naturalists John Simpson and Bill Randel in a classroom presentation on Winter Tree ID. We’ll explore the different characteristics of woody plants that enable identification in the winter months. Once we understand these characteristics, we will use the book, Trees of Arkansas, by Dr. Eric Sundell in the identification process. All DLAMN NiTs attending the Winter Tree ID events will receive a copy of Dr. Sundell’s book.

A tree does not die in the winter; nor is it resurrected in the spring.
It waits. – Hesse

Registration is recommended.
