DLAMN - The Great Backyard Bird Count
About this event
Since 1998, the Audubon Society along with Cornell University, has sponsored the Great Backyard Bird Count. Many people from around the world participate in identifying local birds and then reporting their finds. This is truly an example of citizen science at its best. This year's bird count will be held February 14 - 17.
Jerry Butler, from our local Audubon Society, will be presenting a class on how to conduct a backyard bird count. Jerry will cover some of the basics of bird identification, and he will also familiarize you with the Merlin app. The app was developed by Cornell University to aid in identifying birds. It is also a way to report your findings during the GBBC.
The class will be held at the classroom at Ouachita State Park on Saturday, February 8 at 9 am. Besides the classroom portion of his presentation, Jerry will also conduct a short session of "birding" in the park. The class should be over around noon. Participants should wear appropriate footwear and dress for the weather. It would also be handy if you have a pair of binoculars. You may wish to bring water. Snacks will be provided. These hours will count towards NIT training or continuing education.
