About this event
Mosses: The Humble Pioneers of the Journey onto Land is a three part class consisting of a morning classroom presentation, an afternoon Auto Tour/Field Study, followed by numerous Pop-Up Walks/Hikes during the year. The first two parts will be presented on Saturday, February 22.
The morning classroom presentation will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 228 Spring Street from 9:00 to 11:30. Please enter through the red doors next to the playground. The class will break for a “working” lunch from 11:30 to 12:15. During that time we will work on Moss ID. Please bring a sack lunch and drink.
Topics covered in the classroom will include: The Journey to Land, Bryophyte Life Cycle, Characteristics, Ecology, and Identification
The afternoon Auto Tour/Field Study will begin at St. Luke’s at 12:15 and Travel to the Avery Recreation Area below Blakely Dam. From there the group will make several stops along the way to the Spillway Public Use Area. At each stop we will observe moss communities and identify common mosses of Garland and Montgomery counties. There will be very little walking. The Auto Tour/Field Study will conclude around 3:00 p.m.
Bring a friend! Hope to see you there! - Bill
Note: The hours for this class can be used toward either NiT hours or continuing education.
