Would you like to help organize Oaktober 2025?
Audrey Cobb is looking for two additional coordinators to help with the tasks below and other details as they arise:
-
Kickoff event (last weekend of September): secure a location, help with planning and execution.
-
Create a list of ways individuals, families, and organizations/groups can celebrate Oaktober.
-
Outreach other groups/organizations and ask them to celebrate Oaktober. We will promote any other Oaktober event that others organize. NOTE: We are not planning or executing the events that others host. We will give them ideas and promote what they do, but we don’t have the bandwidth to plan their events for them.
-
Help with communications. Create web content, contact the media, find other ways to spread the word.

Information about Oaktober
Why celebrate Oak trees?
Oak trees are a keystone species, meaning that entire ecosystems depend on them for survival and habitat. Acorns from oak trees feed more than 100 different wildlife species. Doug Tallamy found that over 500 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars live on oak trees, more than on any other tree. These insects play an important role in the food web because they are a food source for birds and other animals. Oak trees are also beautiful and can live a long time. Their large branches provide shade, helping to cool down neighborhoods in the summer. They also help reduce flooding and erosion by absorbing rainwater.
How will we celebrate Oaktober in Central Arkansas?
We are working on getting local organizations to host Oaktober events, which we will help promote. We plan to have a kickoff event the last weekend of September (details TBD). Last year the kickoff event was at Southwest Community Center/Dee Brown Library. We aren't sure if this location will work out again this year or not.
