Lake Springdale Trailhead Workday

This project is a collaboration between City of Springdale Parks and Rec, Wild Ones Ozark Chapter, and NWA Master Naturalists to install an all-native rain garden and bioswale at Lake Springdale Trailhead Park.  This is a prominent and heavily-used location along the Razorback Greenway near J.B. Hunt Park and the new AD F&G Nature Center.  This highly visible project will give the public a close look at a formal urban landscape design using only Arkansas native plants.

The plan specs calls for installing and maintaining over 700 plants of 20+ species of woody shrubs, perennials, and grasses.  There is plenty of landscaping and gardening work ahead!  In the coming weeks there will be opportunities to contribute:

Saturday, April 17:  6 workers meet at the NWAMN nursery south of West Fork to help prepare planting stock.  This will involve a sequence of transplanting small seedlings to larger pots and preparing them for outplanting.

Saturday, May 15:  All hands on deck!  Bring your tools to plant 250+ potted seedlings and shrubs at the Lake Springdale site.

This pattern will repeat until we get the entire rain garden and bioswale installed.  And installation is only the beginning.  Tending the garden will be on our schedule from now on.  Being a very public demonstration of what is a new concept for many, we want it to always look ready for prime time.  If the City and the general public like what they see, the tide will turn a little more.

Please respond to Ron using the Email to RSVP to schedule your spot on either or both of these days:
Sat, 4/17 @ 10AM - 6 workers needed for nursery transplanting.
Sat, 5/15 @ 10 AM - MANY workers needed for outplanting at Lake Springdale.  Bring your planting tools - shovels, trowels, pruners, wheelbarrows, watering cans, etc.  (There is no plumbing available at the site, so we get water from Spring Creek nearby.)

Many thanks to Eric Fusilier, Lissa Morrison, and Scott Biehle for developing the plant list, layout, and CAD renderings.

See the project site at the following link.  The project is just west of the "Thunder Chicken" label, between the parking area and the creek.  Springdale - Google Maps
