DLAMN – Flowering Plant Hike to Dripping Springs

Our NEXT hike will take us to a beautiful valley on the outskirts of the city. We will follow an old road for approximately 1.3 miles to Lake Rix. We’ll cross one creek and several wet areas.

Depending on how much rain we receive, you could end up with wet feet if you don’t wear appropriate footwear.

Update:

When we went to do a preview of Saturday’s walk/hike, we discovered that the area where the stepping stones were has changed. There are no longer any stepping stones!

In addition to the creek we will cross at the beginning of the walk/hike, there are several other areas that are wet and another small stream about a quarter of a mile past the creek that we will have to cross.

So, our only option is to  wade across the creek and the small stream. The creek is 12 to 15 feet across and the water at the deepest part is about 12 to 15 inches. The water in the smaller stream is about 6 inches deep. So, either wear boots or plan on taking your shoes and socks off to wade across. A pair of sandals or water shoes to wade would be a good idea.

Along the way we will see an extremely diverse plant community.

Many of the species we have already seen plus we may see large cinnamon ferns, netted chain fern, horsetails, big leaf snowball, sweetspire and more. We’ll pass a beautiful rock face with dripping water that is covered with ferns and moss and highlighted with umbrella magnolia and mountain azalea. If we are lucky, they will be in bloom. However, even if they aren’t in bloom, it is a beautiful location.

The elevation change is only 145 feet and the old road will make for a relatively easy walk. We classify this hike as moderate and will take approximately 3.5 hours with a total distance of 2.6 miles. You will need to bring a sack lunch/snack, water, and insect repellent. We will stop at Lake Rix for a lunch and a beautiful view. PLEASE REGISTER If you are unable to register please reply to this email.

Directions: Because parking is limited and some road signs are confusing, we think it is best to meet near the jug fountain on Whittington Avenue across from Whittington Park . That will allow us to carpool and travel as a group to the parking area for the hike.

Directions to the jug fountain on Whittington Avenue are as follows. Traveling north on Central Avenue, at the junction with Whittington and Park Avenues, turn left onto Whittington Avenue. Follow Whittington Avenue for approximately 1/2 mile and make a U turn to stay on Whittington Avenue. The jug fountain will be on your right. A short distance past the jug fountain the road widens to allow for parking. We will meet there and leave for Lake Rix at 9:00 a.m. sharp.
